Vineyard freshmen Owen Favreau and Spencer Pogue reached the quarterfinals during the second weekend of play in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Individual Tournament South Sectionals, May 20-21 at Barnstable and Newton North High Schools.
The doubles pair won three matches in the tourney, including a 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-3, upset of Barnstable’s sixth-seeded Trevor Blaze and Dan Black on Saturday. Favreau and Pogue fell 6-2, 6-2, to the top seeds from Brookline in the quarterfinals, Sunday at Newton North.
In singles, two Vineyarders played in the round of 16. Zak Danz lost a three-hour battle to Al Bilideau of Old Rochester, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5, and Chris Ferry lost 6-1, 6-0, to second-seeded Max Francis of Barnstable.
