Vineyard FC in the over-40s league clinched the fourth Division Championship in dramatic style on Sunday against a gritty Kendall Wanderers team from Boston Central. They fought back from 1-0 at half-time to 2-2, and won the cup in a penalty shootout.

In the second half, the first Vineyard goal came when top scorer Adeilson Guerra scored from a direct free kick. Their second goal came from midfield maestro Ronaldo Andrade, when he whipped in a goal from 25 yards past the keeper. The Vineyard then let the Wanderers back in the game when they scored an excellent goal from 30 yards. With the wind against them and the Wanderers on the front foot, the Vineyard held on to take the game into penalty.

Goalkeeper Carlos DeOliveira made a fine double save to keep the Vineyard in the game. After the first three penalties, the Wanderers were one-nil up in the shootout. Carlos DeOliveira then stopped the next penalty, and Mocair DeSouza calmly slotted the ball past the Wanderers goalkeeper. Another heroic save by goalkeeper DeOliveira meant that captain Matt Malowski had the chance to win the game. He coolly stroked the ball past the goalkeeper to give the Vineyard their first Over-40s trophy. The team will take a well-deserved break until next Spring.
