The fourth-seeded Vineyarders pushed unbeaten No. 1 seed Dover-Sherborn (21-0) to the limit, but came up short in the Division 3 South Sectional semifinals on Thursday, falling to the host Raiders 3-2.
After three matches, the Raiders held a 2-1 lead. Dover-Sherborn’s Max Schuermann topped Zak Danz at first singles, 6-3, 6-0, and Raider Lucas Minas defeated Nainoa Cooperrider, 6-2, 6-1, at second singles. Aksel Cooperrider and Owen Favreau put MV on the board with a win at first doubles, beating Jake Budd and Seth Novitch, 6-4, 6-3.
The semifinal came down to two matches that went the distance. James Kelliher and Spencer Pogue completed a Vineyard sweep in doubles by defeating Sean Dougherty and Dan Elman, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 (tiebreaker), but Charles Allen outlasted Chris Ferry at third singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, giving the Raiders the decisive third point.
The Vineyarders finished up a fine season at 14-3, graduating six seniors: Zak Danz, Nainoa and Aksel Cooperrider, James Kelliher, Max Hammond, and Ben Nadelstein.
