Boat Massachusetts, a four-day boating safety course, will be offered free to the public at the Tisbury Fire Department on May 30 and 31, June 5 and 6, from 5 to 8 pm.
Classes are for adults and children who are at least 12 years old. Attendance is required at all dates, and registration is also required. To register, go to mass.gov/ole. The course identification number is 4054.
The primary purpose of Boat Massachusetts, a course provided by the Massachusetts environmental police and the Tisbury harbor department, is to foster safe boat operation through increased awareness of required safety equipment, safe boating practices, and legal responsibilities, according to a press release from the Massachusetts Environmental Police.
Children from the ages of 12 to 15 years old who successfully complete the course will be issued a safety certificate allowing them to operate a motorboat without adult supervision, as required by state law. The course will also meet the state requirements for personal watercraft users who are 16 and 17 years old, and all who complete the course will be issued a safety certificate. Taking the class as a family is encouraged.
