Vermont orthopaedic surgeon David A. Halsey, M.D., became first vice president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) board of directors today at the organization’s 2017 annual meeting. According to a press release, the new role is the second in a three-year term of volunteer service that concludes with Dr. Halsey serving as president of the academy in 2018–19.

Dr. Halsey is a professor in the department of orthopaedics and rehabilitation at the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, Vt., and staff orthopaedic surgeon on Martha’s Vineyard, at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Prior to joining the full-time academic faculty, he was in a small private practice for 18 years in the Upper Valley region of Vermont and New Hampshire.

Dr. Halsey earned a bachelor of arts degree at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt., and his medical degree from the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He completed a general surgery internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Vermont.

Dr. Halsey has served in dozens of leadership roles across 15 different academy councils and committees over his 20 years of volunteering for the AAOS, including two terms on the AAOS board of directors, chair of the board of specialty societies, chair of the board of councilors, chair of the council on advocacy, and as a board member of the Association Orthopaedic PAC. He also served as an officer in the presidential line of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), and was a member of the executive committee of the Vermont Orthopaedic Society and the Vermont Medical Society’s board of councilors.

“It is both an honor and a privilege to serve the academy in this leadership capacity,” said Dr. Halsey. “I am grateful for this opportunity, and will continue to advocate on behalf of our members and for our patients to ensure the highest quality of orthopaedic care.”
