Wind festival was a success

To the Editor:

This is a big thank-you note to the parks department of Oak Bluffs, the local cultural council, and the Oak Bluffs Association for their support of the Martha’s Vineyard Wind Festival. Thanks also to the business community that provided the gifts and prizes to make the day special.

The Martha’s Vineyard Wind Festival, now in its sixth year, is able to provide instruction and supplies to children who want to build and fly kites for free. Afternoon flying for all ages brought lots of wonderful kites to the park.

Salty’s handmade tissue kite was especially beautiful; he and his wife have participated every year at the event. They won the grand prize, along with John Hens from Pennsylvania, whose kite was the most unusual. The morning rain almost moved the event to Sunday, but as the tent went up the sky cleared, and we had perfect weather for a perfect day. So thanks to Mother Nature too.

The day was made even more special by the wedding proposal to my granddaughter Andrea by her now-fiancé Kyle. They were among my friends and family who make this event possible with their hard work and help. Archie Stewart and his friend Richie brought the big kites from Boston that dazzled the crowds, and Bob Glover, formerly of Oak Bluffs, added to the display with the longest kite. I have always thought of this event as a community art project, and it was more evident than ever as the kids with their handmade kites lifted them to the sky, and off they flew.
