Invaluable intern

To the Editor:

The board of directors of Friends of Sengekontacket (FOS) at its August meeting extended an enthusiastic thank-you to Danielle Cleary for a job well done. Danielle worked as an intern for FOS for the summer 2016 season.

The internship program at FOS is designed to provide assistance to the Oak Bluffs and Edgartown Shellfish departments. Danielle spent her days working with quahogs, steamers, scallops, and oysters. This is important work, because shellfish help reduce nitrogen in bodies of water like Sengekontacket Pond.

At present, nitrogen levels in the pond are high, just below the maximum level considered to be safe. Nitrogen enters ponds like Sengekontacket from septic tanks and runoff from lawn fertilizer. Part of the mission of FOS is to monitor this problem and provide remedies. The internship program is part of that effort, and we are grateful to Danielle for her dedicated and enthusiastic work.
