The Martha’s Vineyard Film Center will host a special screening of “Paper Lanterns” next Tuesday evening, August 23, at 7:30 pm. “Paper Lanterns” tells the little-known story of 12 American POWs who were killed by the atomic bomb that destroyed the city of Hiroshima in August 1945. The U.S. military kept the casualties secret until the facts were revealed under freedom-of-information legislation many decades later. One of the POWs, Normand Brissette, was a Navy flier from Lowell, Mass. The film also tells the story of Shigeaki Mori, a Hiroshima bomb survivor who has devoted much of his life to preserving the legacy of the American POWs. A Q&A session with director Barry Frechette, producer Peter Grilli, Hiroshima residents Mr. and Mrs. Bunzo Suzuki, and others will follow the screening.
