To the Editor:
The MV United Recreation program is pleased to have a record number of players this spring — more than 300 children ages pre-K to fifth grade are sharing the West Tisbury School back soccer fields. Huge thanks to the equally record number of volunteer coaches, who have stepped up to support the program and the players. The Rec Program would like to send a special shout-out to all the older MV United Travel players who are coaching, sharing their knowledge and talents with younger Rec players in between their own practices and games. We have an amazing group out on the fields this season, players and coaches alike.
A Soccer Kickoff started the season with players and families meeting their coaches. All players were given their new colored jerseys and soccer kits, bringing back a tradition of each team sporting its own color. Come practice day, the soccer fields were a flood of color.
Unfortunately, Mini kickers’ first practice was rained out, but both U8 and U10 players enjoyed perfect weather for their first week back on the fields. On Saturday, the fields were filled to the brim with players, siblings, parents, grandparents, and community members as the first games commenced. Excitement was everywhere.
A big thank you to all who have helped get this season off the ground — top-dressing fields, laying the lines, procuring jerseys, inflating balls, putting up new nets, etc. It takes a great community to put together a successful volunteer soccer program. Come join the fun — Saturday mornings, 9 am to 12:30 pm, West Tisbury School back soccer fields. We’ll see you there.
