Chilmarkers go to the polls from noon to 8 pm in the Chilmark Community Center on Wednesday, April 27, to elect town officers. The election will feature one contest for a seat on the library board of trustees and a changing of the guard on the three-member board of selectmen.

Carol Shweder and Zoe Thompson will vie for a three-year seat on the Chilmark library board of trustees.

James Malkin will run unopposed for a seat on the board of selectmen now held by Jonathan Mayhew, who opted not to run for re-election.

Since moving to Chilmark year-round in 2010, Mr. Malkin has served on several town committees. A member of the finance committee, he has played an important leadership role in town efforts to preserve Squibnocket Beach as chairman of the Squibnocket Beach committee. His wife Joan Malkin is a member of the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, town planning board, and conservation commission.

Asked what prompted his decision to run for a seat on the board of selectmen, Mr. Malkin cited his sense of public service.

“I decided to run when Jonathan Mayhew decided to step down,” he said. “Chilmark is very important to me — my association with Chilmark goes back to the late ’70s, when my wife and I bought land and built the house we live in. We are deeply attached to the town. Working with the town is a way to contribute in a substantive way to our community.”

There are no candidates on the ballot for surveyor of wood, lumber, and bark, or fence viewer.

The following candidates are running unopposed: Clarissa Margaret Allen, board of assessors; Katherine Lees Carroll, board of health; Susan B. Murphy, finance committee; Clarissa Margaret Allen, site review committee; Mitchell Posin, Peter Cook, and Christopher Martin MacLeod, planning board; Everett Poole, moderator; Melanie Becker, treasurer; Sarah Cook, cemetery commissioner; and Keith Emin, tree warden.
