Six top spellers from the five Island elementary schools and the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School will compete Friday in the Vineyard’s Regional Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Martha’s Vineyard Times.
The Bee starts at 9:30 am in the Performing Arts Center at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. The public is welcome.
The Island spellers are: Owen Favreau from the Charter School eighth grade, Clyde Smith from the Chilmark School fifth grade, Julia Gomes from the Edgartown School eighth grade, fourth grader Alex Turner from the Oak Bluffs School, Lily Sebastian, a sixth grader from the Tisbury School, and Samuel Fetters, a sixth grader from the West Tisbury School.
Jean Holenko of the Oak Bluffs School is the Bee coordinator. Times editor Nelson Sigelman is the pronouncer. Judges are Matt D’Andrea, superintendent of Martha’s Vineyard Public Schools, and Times writer Janet Hefler.
Through spelling bees completed at the classroom, school, and local levels, an initial group of 11 million participants from coast to coast and around the globe will be narrowed down to about 275 expert spellers. Friday’s winner, sponsored by The Times, which underwrites the cost, will compete in the 89th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee to be held during Bee Week, May 24 to 26, at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Oxon Hill, Md., near Washington, D.C. Semifinals and championship finals take place on May 29.
