Old Sculpin Gallery opens the summer season with a couple of exhibits at the gallery on the wharf in Edgartown. An opening reception is planned for Sunday, July 1, from 5 to 7 pm for the first show, which runs from June 30 to July 6. The second exhibit is slated to run from July 21 to 27, with an opening reception on Sunday, July 22, from 5 to 7 pm. Among the artists in the exhibits are Anna “Lowely” Finnerty, Valentine Estabrook, M.B. Thompson Dowlin, and Victor Pisini.
Native New Yorker Finnerty says her formative years were influenced by the city’s museums and galleries. She came to the Island after graduate school, and launched a career in real estate and interior design before focusing on her vibrant pastels.
Finnerty shares in her artist’s statement, “My passion is to paint every day, to learn to see and to express through the vibrant pigments of pastel the luminosity of light as it interacts with form, especially in the landscape. My paintings are an invitation to share in a reflective moment, to rekindle a memory, or to see something old and familiar from a new perspective.”
Painter Valentine Estabrook’s “Fireworks” series is a growing collection of abstract interpretations of NASA space photos taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and Voyager 2. The artist says, “I’m loving the experience. It’s been a wonderful spiritual and intellectual adventure.” She’s currently working on a series titled “Tom’s Meadow,” a look a singular landscape from different focal points done in acrylic on wood.
