On Wednesday evening, June 6, the Rotary Club of Martha’s Vineyard presented the Diana Bardwell/Rotary Scholarship award. According to a press release, the room was filled with parents, siblings, dedicated representatives from the high school, and Rotarians. This year the Rotary Club received more applications from highly qualified high school candidates than ever before. The focus of the award is to spotlight a student who has had extensive involvement in community service and/or a passion for history or law. A unique component of the application process for this award is the interview.
After careful consideration of all the applicants, a select few were chosen for an interview. The scholarship committee met individually with the candidates for a chance to know them beyond the written application. The final decision was made based on both the application and the interview.
This year’s recipient was Rose Engler, senior at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High. Rose will attend Brown University’s 5-year premed program.
At this presentation the Rotary Club also awarded additional scholarship funding to Julia Hart and Molly Houghton, who were recipients of the Rotary/Bardwell Scholarship over the past several years. These young women each submitted a letter of good standing from their schools for the current year, showing good academic progress as well as continued community service. A special merit award was presented to Sean O’Malley for his dedication and commitment to mentoring young people.
The Rotary Club is looking forward to next year’s applicants, as this program continues to grow.
