The 19th-century Unitarian Universalist chapel on Upper Main Street in Vineyard Haven has acoustics well suited for live music, says Diane Purvis, a member of the church’s music committee. The church has hosted various fundraiser concerts benefiting its restoration fund . while also providing the sweet sound of music to the community.

On Sunday, May 27, at 3 pm, they’ll host their Music in the Chapel series with Songs of Peter, Paul and Mary. According to Purvis, a number of Island musicians, including Oak Bluffs music teacher Brian Weiland and his son Aidan, along with music teachers from other Island schools, will perform. “All these concerts are benefits; the musicians donate their talents, and church members provide food,” Purvis said.

All the musicians will play songs performed by the famed folk group, and at the conclusion, they’ll all sing together, Purvis said. There will be a reception afterward so that folks can mingle and enjoy some refreshments. Suggested donation is $15, and after a half-dozen or so of these concerts, Purvis said they’ve raised more than $4,000 for the restoration fund.

“With a $15 donation, that’s pretty good,” she said. “We’re hoping this becomes our signature event. We don’t have a parish hall or a kitchen, but we have this beautiful little gem of a space with great acoustics.”
