Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center hosts Dr. Jeremy Benstein next weekend. Benstein will speak on “The Ten Commandments as a Guide to Building a Sustainable Society” on Saturday, May 19, at 7:30 pm. According to a press release, Benstein is associate director of the Heschel Center in Tel Aviv for Environmental Learning and Leadership in Israel, and a teacher of environmental ethics.
On sustainability and climate change, the release says, Benstein recently wrote, “The climate change issue is part of a larger conversation about what it means to be a sustainable society. Though having become politicized in the United States, and pulled in different directions by commercial and other interests, the idea of sustainability is clear, broad-based, optimistic, and forward-thinking. Sustainability refers to a large-tent social and political agenda that has at its core the vision of a just society with a robust democratic economy and a healthy environment, now and for future generations.”
The next morning, Sunday, May 20, at 10:30 am, Benstein will speak on the topic “Toward a Post-Tribal Israel: Multiculturalism in the Jewish Democratic State.”
Both talks are open to all, and are part of the celebration of the Jewish holiday of Shavuoth. Shavuoth marks the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai, and is celebrated with study sessions and festive foods.
