A community that eats together

To the Editor:

Along with many churches on the Island, the United Methodist Church of Martha’s Vineyard participates in a seasonal community supper program that serves Island residents a free meal once a week. It is an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company, in addition to sitting down to a prepared meal during the cold winter months. Here at Trinity’s Parish Hall in the Campgrounds, Oak Bluffs, we have just completed our third year of inviting local chefs to lend their talents in the kitchen in producing meals for our guests.

The community supper coordinators for Trinity’s program are indebted to the responsive chefs who volunteer their time and skills in the kitchen, to the delight of diners and staff alike. We would like to publicly acknowledge them for their graciousness in serving this Island endeavor. This year’s volunteers are: Chef Deon of Deon’s; Chef Tom Engley; hospital Chef Carrie Welch; Chef Hal Ryerson, owner of Sweet Life; Gina deBettencourt, head chef of Edgartown School; and the chef and kitchen crew at Ocean View of Santoro Hospitality Group.

As with most community programs, the suppers themselves are dependent upon funding or donations in one form or another. We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the generous support given so freely in sponsorship of this undertaking: Tom Engley, Larry Gomez, P.A. Club, Santoro Hospitality Group, VFW Post 9261, Island Food Products, and Greater Boston Food Bank.

Many, many thanks to you all. You have quietly made these evenings truly special.
