The hit Fox singing competition, “American Idol,” has Vineyard ties this season. Edgartown summer resident Sonika Vaid, 20, is now one of the top 24 contestants. Ms. Vaid, who is originally from Weston, was named an “early favorite” in the competition by The Boston Globe. Ms. Vaid auditioned with, “Look at Me,” by Carrie Underwood, but it was her solo rendition of Ariana Grande’s “One Last Time” that clinched her spot in the final 24 on Wednesday.
Ms. Vaid’s introductory clip on American Idol included shots of her and her family at the Edgartown Lighthouse. The Idol judges were complementary of her performance. “We loved you,” Jennifer Lopez told Ms. Vaid. “This is one of the only times this particular season that I saw somebody that I actually think will win this thing,” Harry Connick Jr. added. “That’s a pure, God-given voice.”
American Idol continues every Wednesday and Thursday evening at 7 pm on Fox. For more information, visit americanidol.com.
