The MV Katama will be taken out of service on Wednesday, May 23, for scheduled maintenance, according to Steamship Authority general manager Robert Davis. The freight vessel will undergo work at the Thames Shipyard in Connecticut until July. After that, it will be docked at the Steamship Authority’s Fairhaven facility for a month for additional work. The Katama is scheduled to resume service on Wednesday, August 8.
Steamship Authority general manager Robert Davis told The Times work is done in Fairhaven for economic efficiency. SSA machinists and engineers reserve certain work for themselves that they can do more inexpensively in Fairhaven than at a private shipyard.
