A ruddy bloom or slick similar to algae has appeared across parts of the Tisbury Great Pond. West Tisbury Conservation Committee chairwoman Tara Whiting said she was informed of the matter recently, and that the committee plans to initiate water testing this week.

“It’s different. It’s not your usual algae,” said West Tisbury selectman Kent Healy at the close of the June 14 Selectmen’s meeting. Mr. Healy represents the riparian owners of the Tisbury Great Pond. He said the algae appeared last fall. Town administrator Jennifer Rand suggested that the mild winter may have played a roll in the algae’s longevity. .

“Rick Carney (of the MV Shellfish Group) has taken a sample and is talking to WHOI about about what it is,” she said.
