Friday, May 26

 

Community Meeting

8:30 am

Oak Bluffs School gym

The weekly school meeting will be in honor of veterans. The school band will be performing patriotic songs, and an Island veteran will give a speech.

 

Chilmark School Memorial Day ceremony

9:15 am

Menemsha Basin

Students will be bused to Menemsha at the Coast Guard station, where they will read poems and stories. Then everyone goes down to the docks, where “Taps” will be played and the children throw flowers into the water.

 

March to the Sea Parade

12:30 pm

Ocean Park, Vineyard Haven

The Tisbury School’s annual Memorial Day celebration. Students will leave the school and march to Owen Park via Spring Street and Main Street. The ceremony will take approximately 45 minutes. Students will have flowers to carry in the parade and to throw in the harbor, commemorating those who have given their lives for their country. The school band will be playing and flags will be waving, and they hope you will come downtown to see the parade.

 

All-School Assembly

1:30 pm

West Tisbury School gym

The West Tisbury School is hosting an all-school assembly where community members are welcome to attend. The band will be playing popular tunes to start off, and then continue on to play “Taps” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Kindergarteners through eighth graders will be performing songs as well.

 

March to the Sea Parade

1 pm

Finger Piers, Edgartown

The Edgartown School’s annual Memorial Day celebration. Students begin at the school and then march to the courthouse to lay flowers at the monuments. The school band will be playing patriotic songs. Kids will recite the Gettysburg Address and the Pledge of Allegiance, and throw flowers into the sea.

Martha’s Vineyard March for Heroes

6:30 am

VFW Post 9261, Oak Bluffs

Martha’s Vineyard March for Heroes is a 26.2-mile ruck march event to raise funds for local veteran entities, including the VFW, the American Legion, and the SSG Matthew Pucino Foundation. Donations can be made on website. Follow them on Facebook at facebook.com/marthasvineyardmarchforheroes.

 

Sunday, May 28

 

24th annual Oak Bluffs Memorial Day Road Race

10 am

Summercamp, Oak Bluffs

USATF-certified course around East Chop to benefit Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard. Fun run starts at 9:30 am, and the 5K will begin at 10 am.

 

Free Bluegrass Concert

4 pm

St. Andrew’s Church, Edgartown

Moving nimbly from traditional folk to progressive bluegrass, Hitch and the Giddyup trade in the musical wares of soulful singing, hot picking, and deft songcraft. Spitfire banjo, punchy mandolin, and nimble guitar work combined with rich vocal harmonies create a unique yet familiar sound.

Outdoor worship at Menemsha Harbor.

 

Monday, May 29

 

Memorial Day Picnic

12 pm-4 pm

Tashmoo Waterworks, Tisbury

All are welcome. Bring a picnic; grills provided. Ice cream for the children, provided by the town of Tisbury. Music by the Flying Elbows, subsidized by the Martha’s Vineyard Cultural Commission. Chalk art, children’s games, rowboating on the pond! No pets, except llamas.

 

Memorial Day Parade

10 am

American Legion, 34 William Street, Tisbury.

Parade travels to Oak Grove Cemetery, where there will be a ceremony at the Hall of Flags and another at the Civil War monument.
