Martha’s Vineyard broke open a 6-6 tie with five goals in the final period to beat the Fairhaven Blue Devils, 11-8, in a non-league boys lacrosse game Friday at Dan McCarthy Field in Oak Bluffs.

With the win, the Vineyarders bounced back from a tough loss on Thursday to Bishop Feehan, improving to 5-10 on the season. Fairhaven dropped to 10-5.

“We talked about all year, we had a bubble of games that were all going to look the same, and this was one of those games,” Vineyard Coach Chris Greene said after the win. “It was going to be a dogfight, and at the end of the day we made a bunch of little plays, and we had a great third quarter as far as ground balls went. Offensively, we’re starting to get the spacing thing. We’re playing a lot of sophomores and juniors. It’s been a learning process, and it’s nice to come out on top.”

Jacob Gundersen netted three goals on eight shots, and added an assist, to lead the Vineyard offense. Riley Amaral and Sam Wallace each scored a pair of goals and assisted once. Ivan Sheppard and Zach Moreis notched a goal and an assist apiece. Thomas Weston and Colby Zarba tallied once. John Morris picked up an assist and hustled to control eight loose balls. Jack Garrett assisted on the first Vineyard goal. Max Smith made six saves, and earned the win in net.
