The Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club hosts its annual plant sale at the Old Mill across from the Mill Pond in West Tisbury on Memorial Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 27 and 28, from 9 am to 2 pm. The plant selection is wide and interesting, including geraniums in all sizes and colors, begonias, buddleia, tomatoes, lettuce, eggplant, peppers, nepeta, herbs, figs, hydrangea, lavender, papyrus, Dr. Van Fleet roses, rosemary, sage, streptocarpella (individual plants and hanging baskets), azalea, holly, skimmia, succulents, and other perennials. Gardeners should plan to come early; these are carefully tended plants that would make a great addition to any Vineyard garden.
Proceeds from the greenhouse sale and all other fundraising efforts by the Garden Club go to the preservation and restoration of the Old Mill, an antique building with a deed dated from as early as 1760, but with earlier historical references suggesting a date almost a hundred years earlier than that. In addition to caring for the Old Mill, the Garden Club donates a scholarship annually to a Vineyard high school student bound for a college major in a field related to environmental landscape, farming, or other such areas of study.
The Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club, established in 1924, is an Island-wide community nonprofit made up of nearly 200 members, including many seasonal residents, who share a passion for gardening, conservation, and maintaining the Island’s unique environment. Monthly meetings are both educational and social; programs are varied and designed to meet personal and community needs. New members and guests are always welcome.
