The wins just keep coming for the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School baseball team.
The Vineyarders won their seventh straight game, following an 0-4 start, by edging host Somerset Berkley 5-4 in eight innings on Wednesday afternoon.
With the teams tied 4-4 after the regulation seven innings, Nick Fiore singled with one out in the eighth. Nick Bischoff came in to pinch-run, advanced to second base on a grounder, took third on a wild pitch, and crossed the plate with the winning run on a passed ball.
Elias Fhagen-Smith sealed the win in the bottom half of the eighth by making a diving catch on the first base side to end the game.
Chris Mayhew was the winning pitcher, relieving Vineyard starter James Sashin with a runner on first in the fifth inning, and closing down the Raiders the rest of the way. Mayhew held the hosts scoreless and hitless, striking out two batters and walking one in four innings. He also punished the Raiders on offense, with three singles, one run scored, and a stolen base.
Jonas Lukowitz led off the game with a double, added an RBI triple in the second inning, scored twice, and stole two bases.
James Sashin and Elias Fhagen-Smith each stroked RBI singles in the first inning, and Sam Bresnick singled in the second.
