The 2016 IKA Kitespeed World Championships ended on Friday. The races were held on the flat, windy offshore waters of Martha’s Vineyard from Oct. 22 through Nov. 4. Rob Douglas (US-55) took first place in 10 out of the total 14 races. Mr. Douglas sailed his Cabrinha Apollo prototype kites, scoring third overall in fastest speed. Mr. Douglas dedicated his world championship victory to all individuals and their families who are fighting cancer or who have fought cancer. Mr. Douglas was diagnosed with stage II Hodgkin lymphoma in August.
Alex Caizergues (F-21) from France placed second overall, and sailed the fastest 500-meter port-tack race in kitesurfing history, with an average speed of 47.850 knots and a max speed of more than 53 knots. Third place overall went to Sylvain Hoceini (F-53) from France. Best speed of the world championship event went to Jamie Douglas, who placed fourth overall and sailed an average speed of 48.173 knots over 250 meters.
