For the second year in a row, the high school men’s varsity soccer team, under the leadership of Coach Esteban Aranzabe, have emerged victorious as EAC conference champions and state title contenders. Despite the graduation of a star-studded team of 14 seniors, Coach Aranzabe has managed to take a young, disconnected team and maintain a dominant presence in the MIAA soccer community.
Although the team is for the most part very young, at the helm is senior Jason Lages, an athlete who has left a mark in the record books, not just at the high school but as the leading scorer in the commonwealth, across all schools and all divisions. Opposite the scoring end of the field is junior goalkeeper Julian Carter, who took his place between the pipes when the Vineyard’s original starting goalkeeper, John Gonscalvez, was injured in a preseason scrimmage. Through hard work and dedication, Carter has earned the designation of the No. 1 Division 3 goalkeeper in the state.
With a 12-3-2 record in their rear view, the team prepares for a contest with Seekonk on Friday, Nov. 6, at 2:30 pm at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. The focus is simple: One game at a time. This is the mantra of Coach Aranzabe, his staff, and his team.
